So for a starting battery the more surface area you have, the more current available for cranking, higher CCA is achieved. Generally the plates are thinner to allow this instant delivery characteristic. Because the plates are thin, you can stack more in each cell to create more surface area overall. The downside is, the power discharges fast, and quickly dissipates under repeated loads, and requires new charge feeding in to replenish the energy. Inside a battery for Deep Cycle, used for a power supply rather than starting, the battery plates are thicker, to hold the energy in the plate longer and supply a steady consistent power such as you would need to run your camper. These types of batteries can run longer as they are denser, but they wont provide the same cranking amps if the plate size is identical in surface dimensions. Recognizing the need to supply more reserve capacity, for improved starting and running thirsty electronics, Motobatt has used additional empty space inside the battery case to make the plates inside taller. Thus increasing the surface area to create more Cold cranking amps than OE designs. This allowed us to make the plates thicker than normal, and in doing so they hold more reserve capacity than a normal cranking battery. This also makes them more robust, and less prone to vibration damage, they handle being deeply discharged and still being able to recover without failure. This happens often in powersport applications as they are often used infrequently and hence starting attempts are often made when the battery is in a low state of charge resulting in ruining the battery. Being able to generate the CCA numbers that manufacturers request from their battery is key, lesser designs run out of puff quickly as the voltage drops the ability to provide maximum CCA diminishes rapidly.
